INITIATIVE
Youth Gun Violence Prevention
Post-Takedown Community Engagement Strategy

Issue
A large-scale takedown can be traumatic for community members and create a vacuum in crew leadership.

Solution
We created a multi-agency community engagement policy plan that connects residents to immediate resources, informs them about the law enforcement action and provides services to youth at-risk of filling the void in leadership to stop the cycle of violence and reformation of crews.

The Policy Plan
  • Immediate Notification of Stakeholders
  • The Fact Sheet
  • Community Debrief
  • Precision Community Engagement
  • Next Generation Redirection
Key Partners
  • New York Police Department
  • Mayor's Office to Prevent Gun Violence
  • Mayor's Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety
  • District Attorney's Offices
  • Crisis Management System
  • New York City Housing Authority
Changing the Narrative
When community members are informed they are able to disseminate accurate information and gather the community to process, heal and take steps to prevent the reoccurrence of crew violence.

By reaching out to youth during this critical time, service providers and community members can show youth that people care about them and are here to help.
