INITIATIVE
Youth Gun Violence Prevention
Creating Pathways for Tomorrow's Adults

Issue
Engaging youth in positive, social activities is an important way to keep them from misguided, violent behavior. Participation in the workforce is the most effective deterrent. By working, youth gain economic independence and self-esteem, while affording them a healthy life, free of violence, uncertainty and instability.

However, without the proper skills, experience, and network, securing employment is difficult for youth who are seeking an alternative to the streets. In addition, with the automation of work and the advances in technology many high-risk youth are not competitive in the current job market, further isolating them from mainstream society and impeding their prosperity.

Solution
Working with our NYC Cure Violence partners, we are developing a job readiness program that is tailored specifically to high-risk youth. Understanding that youth who are involved in gun or gang violence have needs unlike their peers, the program focuses on addressing those needs in a safe environment, led by staff they know and trust. Job readiness training is only one part of the solution, our approach includes multiple phases which entails continuous engagement with the participant. To become successful adults, productive citizens, and an asset to their communities, youth must look beyond their immediate options, and imagine that more is possible. Our program will provide youth with the immediate and long-term vision that they are capable of achieving.

The Model
Our program is designed to engage youth in a purposeful way. It can be adapted by our NYC Cure Violence partners to best meet the needs of their participants. At each phase of the program participants are stimulated to think about their future and plan their next steps. The program consists of the following components:
  • Job Readiness Program that fosters the soft skills youth need to be successful in the workforce.

  • Assessment and Planning of youth's short-term options as they prepare for long-term success. This may take the form of entry-level jobs, volunteering, or completing educational programs.

  • Exposure to various high-demand industries.

  • Mentoring by professionals in their chosen career paths.
Throughout this multi-year intervention Cure Violence staff will be a consistent presence in the youth's life. They will continue being the youth's support and ensure the youth stays on track.
