INITIATIVE
Youth Gun Violence Prevention
Understanding What Works

Issue
Youth gun violence is a systemic problem and we must gain a better understanding of the severe, persistent needs and life experiences of youth and what is effective in stopping violence.

Solution
Utilizing a needs and strengths-based approach, we developed a custom database for 29 NY Cure Violence sites that captures the needs and life experiences of youth involved in violence, such as:
  • Violent victimization
  • Trauma
  • Complicated Grief
  • Food Insecurity
  • Healthy Support Systems
  • Unstable Housing
Ultimately, the database will provide the data necessary to change harmful narratives about young people involved in violence and provide the insights into what interventions are most effective in helping youth transform their lives.

Equipping decision-makers with comprehensive information is essential, as we cannot truly prevent gun violence without addressing root causes.

Changing the Narrative
Black youth disclose an average of three losses of loved ones to homicide starting in early childhood and with increasing frequency during the teen and young adult years.

Communities experiencing the most gun violence overlap with areas of concentrated disadvantage, showing that poverty, inequality and violence all go hand in hand. For example, communities that suffer from persistent violence also have poorer health outcomes such as increased heart disease, stress related illness, miscarriages and infant mortality.
