ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY November 27, 2017 Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award The Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award recognizes pioneering leadership in the field of criminal justice. The award honors the history of the Crime Commission as it traces its roots back to the late 1800s, when the New York Society for the Prevention of Crime helped bring down Tammany Hall and install Theodore Roosevelt as president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 2017, the Crime Commission honored Jeh C. Johnson, Former Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017); Partner, Paul | Weiss. Throughout his career, Secretary Johnson has embodied the spirit of the Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award as he works to strengthen cybersecurity, reduce threats, and protect civil liberties. Distinguished Service Award The Distinguished Service Award is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to criminal justice innovation. The 2017 honoree, Stuart A. Shorenstein, Cozen O'Connor, and member of the Crime Commission's Board of Directors. Throughout his career Mr. Shorenstein has been a leader in seeking change in government policy and providing opportunities for others to present their positions and have their voices heard. The event was held overlooking the city on the 35th floor of the Mutual of America building, where representatives from New York City's law enforcement and business communities joined the Crime Commission in paying tribute to the honorees.
