ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY December 1, 2014 Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award The Theodore Roosevelt Leadership Award recognizes pioneering leadership in the field of criminal justice. The award honors the history of the Crime Commission as it traces its roots back to the late 1800s, when the New York Society for the Prevention of Crime helped bring down Tammany Hall and install Theodore Roosevelt as president of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. In 2014, the Crime Commission honored New York City Police Department Commissioner William J. Bratton. During his career, Commissioner Bratton has served as Chief or Commissioner of five different police departments, and is the only person ever to lead the police agencies of the nation's two largest cities Los Angeles and New York City. Since his appointment by Mayor de Blasio, New York City has seen crime at record lows. Humanitarian Award The Crime Commission's Humanitarian Award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the criminal justice field. The inaugural honoree Howard P. Milstein, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of New York Private Bank & Trust has been a long time supporter of the Crime Commission and has provided hands-on leadership and deep commitment to many law enforcement, counter-terrorism, and homeland security programs. Lifetime Achievement Award The Crime Commission's Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes visionary leaders who have demonstrated a life-long commitment to improving public safety. The inaugural honoree Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy has served Long Island for 18 years. Along the way, Representative McCarthy has been at the forefront of the national gun reform conversation, and one of Congress's strongest advocates for commonsense gun control policies. The event was held overlooking the city on the 35th floor of the Mutual of America building, where representatives from New York City's law enforcement and business communities joined the Crime Commission in paying tribute to the honorees.
